Valentines Idea

My daughter, Emma's teacher (grade one) gave the kids Valentine's Day "homework" that I thought I would share with all of you. She said that instead of just handing out regular valentines, she wanted the kids to do what she called "very important person" cards. The idea was to write something nice about each child as a gift to them. I will admit that, at first, I thought it was going to be a lot of work, but it turned out to be great.

I had my daughter think of something nice to say about each child and we wrote it all out on a sheet of paper for her to copy. Thinking of something nice to say about her friends was easy, but it took her a minute to think of something for the kids that she isn't really friends with. I gave her some lines recipe cards so that she could write the quality for each kid. She wrote anything from "Aly is a very good friend to me" to "Marwa is nice" to "Aleksandra is good at soccer" and then wrote "From: Emma" at the bottom. I had purchased small Star Wars valentines before I got the note from the teacher, so we stapled those to the cards and then Emma coloured the rest of the card with smiling hearts, stars, etc... It took forever, but she had fun. I wish I had taken some pictures of them before she brought them to school today! She said that the kids loved them.

We had a great time reading all of the cute things that the kids wrote on her "VIP" cards tonight when she got home. It was really sweet to see Emma's face as I read them all to her.

I know its a bit late, with Valentine's Day being in 2 days, but I thought I would share anyway - there's always next year, right?

One of the kids make a Valentine that looked like a flower, with a Tootsie Pop sucker, which I thought was cute. Personally, I wouldn't give out suckers, but I think I might do it with pencils next year, using the eraser as the middle of the flower.

Here is Emma, holding her flower valentine, which said, on the other side of the leaf, "Emma is nice."

A close up of her holding it.
